Seventy-two seats. Six Contact Spheres. One member per profession.
Every BNI chapter holds one seat per profession. When a category fills, it closes until a new chapter opens. Fourteen seats are taken in the Upstate Business Network chapter. Sixty-one are still open. Find yours below.
Forty people in a hotel ballroom. Everybody selling, nobody buying. You collected eleven business cards, threw nine away in the car, and never heard from the other two. You went back twice and stopped going.
That room failed for one reason. There were four realtors, three insurance agents, and two mortgage guys in it. Everyone was competing for the same attention, so nobody could afford to actually help anyone.
BNI fixed that in 1985 with a single rule: one member per profession. When you hold the HVAC seat, you are the only HVAC contractor in the room. Every other member can refer you without hesitation, because referring you costs them nothing and makes them look good to their own client.
That rule turns a room full of competitors into a room full of referral partners. It is also why the seats matter so much, and why they close.
BNI organizes professions into six Contact Spheres, groups that naturally feed each other work. A closing moves the realtor, the lender, the inspector, the title agent, the insurance agent, and the moving company. BNI reports that your Contact Sphere provides 50 to 60% of your referrals.
When a chapter member sends you business, they are lending you their relationship. The prospect arrives already trusting you because someone they trust vouched for you. That is a fundamentally different conversation than a cold call, and it closes at a fundamentally different rate.
Relationships are built by repetition, not intensity. Meeting the same people every Tuesday for a year is how trust gets built, and trust is what makes someone comfortable putting their own name behind your work.
BNI reports more than 355,000 members in over 11,800 chapters across 78 countries, founded in 1985. In the last twelve months those members passed 17.8 million referrals to each other.
Closed business figure from the BNI mid-year report, August 11, 2025, based on internal BNI research and self-reported closed business from U.S. members between July 1, 2024 and June 30, 2025, calculated by dividing total closed business by the average number of members over that period. Referral and conversion figures published by BNI. Results vary by profession, market, and participation.

Givers Gain.
The whole philosophy in two words. Help other people get business and the business comes back to you. BNI chapters have proven it works since 1985, and it is the only thing anyone is asked to believe before walking in the door.
Each sphere holds twelve profession seats in three tiers. Key categories anchor the sphere and generate the most referral flow. Supporting and additional categories fill it out. Tap any open seat to request a visit.
The people who make an occasion happen. Weddings, corporate events, parties, fundraisers. When one gets booked, everyone else in this sphere gets a call.
Everyone a business owner calls when they decide to grow. One marketing conversation almost always uncovers three more needs.
The professionals every business needs to operate. These relationships compound, because a business that trusts you with its money trusts you with introductions.
The strongest referral sphere in BNI, because one closing triggers a dozen other transactions. A house changing hands moves everyone in this group.
The people who build it, fix it, and keep it running. Homeowners rarely need just one. A roof leak becomes a drywall job becomes a paint job.
People who help others feel better and look better. Highly personal referrals, and the trust transfers fast between these professions.
These seventy-two are the categories BNI builds balanced chapters around. They are not the only categories a chapter can hold. If your profession is not on the list, it almost certainly still has a place. Ask and we will confirm your category status before your first meeting.
Ask About Your CategoryA visitor seat puts you in the room for one Tuesday morning meeting at no cost and with no commitment. You meet the members, see how BNI actually works, and decide from there. If your category is open, we will tell you on the spot.
Sixty-one are open right now. When yours fills, it closes until a new chapter opens in the Upstate. Come see the room before you decide.
